Daniel Some, Ph.D.

Principal Scientist

Dan Some obtained his B.Sc. in Physics cum laude from Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, and his Ph.D. in Physics from Brown University under Prof. Arto Nurmikko. His record of experimental research and applied R&D encompasses various aspects of semiconductors and electro-optics: semiconductor diode lasers; photoluminescence spectroscopy of semiconductors; combined ultrafast laser/THz spectroscopy of quantum wells; ultrafast laser amplifiers; integration of lasers with scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy to produce new imaging modalities; military electro-optic equipment; and applications of laser scattering to defect detection on patterned semiconductor wafers as well as macromolecular characterization. He has authored 10 patents in the field of laser-based wafer inspection in addition to 7 peer-reviewed scientific publications.

Prior to obtaining his doctoral degree, Dr. Some served for five years as an officer of the Israel Defense Forces in the role of test and evaluation engineer for electro-optics. He completed 2.5 years of post-doctoral research at Los Alamos National Laboratory, and one year of post-doctoral research with the Dept. of Chemical Physics, Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. Following that he joined Applied Materials' Process Diagnostics and Control Division in Israel, where he was appointed Member of Technical Staff. In the latter position Dr. Some conducted six years of R&D to exploit laser scattering and imaging for patterned wafer defect detection, applying experimental and numerical simulation techniques, developing detection algorithms, and contributing to PDC's highly successful wafer inspection tools.

As Principal Scientist, Dr. Some currently investigates detection and measurement techniques for macromolecular characterization at Wyatt Technology Corp, developing both hardware and software for new instruments. He also leads WTC's efforts in bioaerosol monitoring.
